Clint x Reader
“Meeting the Parents”
Avengers AU – High School
AN: This one is different in the sense that the reader and Clint aren’t in a romance at the start of the story.
You looked up from your sketchbook as the group of popular students walked by the place where you were sitting down and drawing in your sketchbook. The leader of the popular girls happened to be your older sister and as she looked down her nose at you – you narrowed your eyes in anger before she walked off. When you were sure that she had gone, your fist tightened around your pencil so much that you nearly snapped it.
Time and time again you were told that you would never measure up to your sister’s accomplishments although it was always done non-verbally. You had just about given up on showing your parents your report because you knew that they would just brush you off and start on your sister’s latest accomplishments.
You wanted to scream at your parents “Hey, do you remember that you had two kids?” however you already knew that doing that wouldn’t achieve anything. You actually enjoyed (to a point) coming to school because it gave you a chance to get away from your family and hang around with some decent people.
“Hello (Name).” Loki said, sitting next to you and disrupting your train of thought.
Your friendship with Loki was more of a brother/sister relationship as you both continually looked out for each other. Although Loki didn’t exactly get on with his brother, Thor, it wasn’t as bad as what you had to endure and sometimes when it just got too much, you’d stay at Loki’s overnight and try and prank Thor or the three of you would just watch movies and then go to sleep.
Loki prodded your shoulder gently; “Family problems?” He asked sympathetically, noticing the direction of your scowl.
“You could say that.” You admitted, relaxing your grip on the pencil, “My sister is apparently bringing one of her boyfriends over for dinner tonight. The poor male doesn’t know what he’s in for. He is in for a whole night of listening to how good (Y/S/N) is and how everyone is so blessed to be around her.”
Loki grimaced in agreement, before standing up and handing you your backpack; “We should probably get to class. Are you sure you don’t want to stay over at our place tonight?”
You sighed and stood up yourself before taking your backpack from him, “I really, really wish I could, Loki but apparently it’s a big deal that (Y/S/N) is bringing her boyfriend to this dinner and it is such a monumental occasion that everyone in our immediate family needs to be present.”
“Just remember that one day, you’ll have this amazing job and everyone will be talking about how good you are.” Loki advised.
“Thanks, Loki but I don’t want that.” After seeing Loki’s shocked and slightly amused expression, you elaborated, “All my life I’ve been shown that I’ll never be good enough. That there will always be someone that is better than me at something. I would never wish that on anybody not even my sister.”
*Time skip to the last class of the day – English*
Loki slid into the seat next you and smiled as he took out Shakespeare’s Macbeth. During English class, when Loki was asked to read and he thought no one was looking or listening, his face would light up when he was reading and there was such passion and such determination on his face that you could actually picture him playing this role.
His voice was so hypnotic that he single-handedly made Shakespeare sound really interesting and enjoyable for everyone.
You took out your own book and opened to the relevant act that you were supposed to be reading. Shakespeare’s Macbeth never failed to strike a chord within you; maybe it was because you could understand what drove Macbeth to make the decisions that he did. Lady Macbeth did freak you out though and while you could understand her motivations, you didn’t like the way that she goaded Macbeth into killing the king.
About ten minutes later you realised that you were just reading and re-reading the same paragraph over and over again. However before you could begin reading the next paragraph, there was a yell of a very familiar voice from outside “WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE DINNER’S OFF? DO YOU REALISE HOW IMPORTANT THIS WAS TO ME?!”
You snuck a look at Loki who was still reading but had a slight frown between his eyebrows – Loki hated being interrupted while he was reading but he was trying very hard to remain calm and not go to yell at your sister for disturbing his class.
By this point, you had given up trying to read and were instead engrossed in what was happening outside. The male that you were supposed to meet tonight was standing opposite your sister and while he spoke too softly for you to hear what he said; his body language more told you what his words did not.
“OKAY, I ADMIT IT! YOU WEREN’T MY ONLY BOYFRIEND BUT YOU ARE THE FIRST ONE I HAVE EVER ASKED TO MEET MY PARENTS; I THOUGHT THAT WOULD MEAN SOMETHING TO YOU! CAN’T YOU JUST COME TO MEET THEM ANYWAY AFTER WE PRETEND THAT THIS NEVER HAPPENED AND THAT YOU DID NOT CAUSE THIS SCENE?!”
Loki stood up so abruptly that his chair clattered onto the floor and with the frown much more pronounced on his face now he strode out of the classroom purposefully. You didn’t know whether he had purposely left the door open or that was purely coincidental but as the door was open you were able to hear everything he said; “You are wrong (Y/S/N), he is not causing a scene. You are. If you want to yell at him, fine but do it in a place where you are not disturbing others. For some, I know it’s hard to believe, school is not a popularity contest – it is actually a place where people go to learn. Some of us don’t like being interrupted by your petty concerns, personally, I believe you brought this situation on yourself.”
(Y/S/N) just stood there, shocked as the class – including the teacher burst into applause and Loki strode back into the classroom as the now ex-boyfriend slipped away from the scene.
*Time skip of four years*
You massaged your temples as you looked down at the envelope that held the results of your exam which, if you passed would allow you to become a forensic anthropologist and guarantee you a placement at the Jeffersonian.
“(Name), have you received your exam marks yet?” Your flatmate, Loki, poked his head around the door and sighed when he saw the envelope unopened on your desk.
“Loki, can you just do me a favour and open it for me?” You asked, dropping your head into your hands.
Loki sighed again and walked over to your desk before grabbing the envelope, “Now if I open this and it’s good, you buy me dinner for two days.”
“Don’t hold your breath.” You muttered, your voice muffled.
You heard the tearing of paper and then nothing, “Loki?” You asked, when there was no response you lifted your head from your hands and saw Loki’s smug grin. “You did it (Name) and now you owe me dinner.”
You pulled the letter from Loki’s hands and stared in shock; Loki wasn’t lying. Not only had you passed the exam but you had passed all your other classmates and received a commendation from one of the people that marked your exam.
*Time skip of two weeks*
“We routinely work with the FBI to help them solve crimes and bring the guilty to justice.” Your boss explained as she finished your tour of the Jeffersonian. “Do you have any questions?”
“Are there any other people that are working in the same area as I am?” You asked, slightly nervous as you didn’t want to miss a clue and let a person’s death go unsolved.
“Yes, we have a few people that specialise in your area.” Your boss smiled kindly as if she had read your thoughts. “In fact here is one of the FBI agents that we work with.” Your boss said as a man walked up to the both of you. Something was bothering you, where had you seen the man before?
“This is one of the new placements; the one that did really well on her exam. I’ll leave you two to get better acquainted.”
“Hi, I’m Clint Barton.” He said, holding out a hand for you to shake.
“I’m (First Name) (Last Name)” You replied, taking his hand.
“(Y/S/N) never told me she had a sister.” Clint said after shaking your hand and that’s when it hit you – he was the male you were supposed to meet that night after high school.
*Another time skip because I’m lazy*
You smiled as your husband balanced your son on his knee, “And then your dad went charging in, gun at the ready to catch the criminal only to find that your mum had beaten him to it and knocked out the criminal with a metal pole.”
Your son laughed and looked up at his dad, love shining in his eyes as Clint finished the story. “Alright, time for bed, little one.” Clint said before whispering “The both of us know you don’t want to go to sleep but we also know not to disobey your mother.”
Your son laughed again and Clint put him down to sleep before turning to you and wrapping an arm around your waist as the both of you walked out of your son’s room.
When your parents found out that you were dating the man that their other daughter was going to bring home, they kept dropping hints that Clint would be better off with your sister than with you. Clint didn’t agree with this and told them so but they refused to believe anything other than what they wanted so the next time that they made a snide remark about how you weren’t good enough for Clint, Clint had simply stood up, offered you his hand and you had both walked out of there for good.
At your wedding day, Loki had stood as best man for Clint and one of your close female friends from work had been your maid of honour. It had been a small ceremony and it was perfect. You thought that your life couldn’t get any better and then you had your son.
Your parents didn’t come to see you, Clint and your son in hospital and for that you were grateful. Like you had said to Loki (who was nearly in tears when you asked him if he wanted to be the godfather), you wouldn’t wish the favourite situation on anybody.
“Whatcha thinking about, babe?” Clint asked as you both made your way to your room.
“Our life.” You answered.
“Answer me one thing.” Clint demanded when you were in your room and he had turned to face you. “Are you happy?”
“No, Clint.” You said and watched his face fall, “I’m ecstatic.”
He raised his head in surprise and you continued, “I have everything I could ever ask for and if my parents didn’t want to see that you were happy and that I was happy it is their loss.”
